UK Embassy: TIEs and appointment availability

November 2024 update

The British Embassy reminds British residents in Spain that the old green certificate, though still a valid residency document in Spain, does not guarantee exemption from the EU’s Entry Exit system, and will involve holders in full registration checks at the border.

On our key information page, we set out the guidance previously given by the Embassy.

This remains valid. The old green cerificate is protected by law inside Spain. But the EU's Entry Exit system, which will come into force later this year, requires travellers to provide biometric information which can only be found on the new plastic TIE card.

So if you are planning to travel in and out of Spain, switching to the new card is stronlgly recommended. It will save you having to re-register your details every time you travel.

In addition, the TIE is more durable and clearly shows that the holder is a beneficiary of the withdrawal agreement.

The Embassy have also been assured by the Alicante National Police that appointment availability for TIEs has improved since the summer.

Their own checks confirm that this is true.

Calpe elections (2023)

New Council (to 2027)

The new Calpe Council has now voted. For the next 4 years (in principle) Calpe will be run by a coalition of 3 parties, and Ana Sala, the current mayor, will continue in post.

The party with the most individual votes, the Partido Poplular, who wanted to force Ana Sala out, have instead been forced into opposition.

Up-to-the-minute news, togther with detailed analysis of the results of the elections (held on the 28th of May) can be found in our members’ area.
